Freedom

What you’re really doing when decluttering is freeing up space for your physical and emotional being. The end-result can be life-changing. The time we spend together in this task is often fun. And always satisfying. And then the time comes when I’m gone and you’re on your own.

What then?

A prospective new client wanted to know how one keeps a home organized after the decluttering process is completed. A great question!

The key to decluttering is to get as close to perfection as possible. Meaning, touch every single item in your home and decide if you want it or not. YES. EVERY SINGLE ITEM.

Decluttering is one of those situations where striving for perfection is not only okay, it’s the goal. You only want to do this ONCE. It’s hard work. And while we’ll laugh a lot, it’s not always fun. It’s taken years to accumulate all this stuff. It’s not going to disappear overnight. But, when it’s done, it’s DONE.

So, I’m out the door. My work here is done. You take in your “new” uncluttered, organized, comfortable space. Your body is free to relax. So is your mind. Until…

You get lazy. Life gets in the way. Responsibilities mount and stuff is where it shouldn’t be. There was a place for everything. Everything was in its place. And now it’s not.

Okay. Stop. Sit. Close your eyes and go back to that moment you first relished your freedom from clutter and chaos. The clutter you see before you is nowhere near what it was before we worked together. You wouldn’t let that happen. You control your environment. It doesn’t control you.

Now, stand up. Use what you’ve learned. Pick up one thing at a time and put it where it belongs. You will not go back to feeling overwhelmed and uncomfortable. You are motivated because it feels so good. YOU’RE FREE!
